This is the greatest hoodie I own…Yup! That’s Andre the Giant’s mugshot. It’s definitely a conversation piece everywhere I go. Let’s take a look back at this night…
Whether you wanna believe he was 7’4 & 520lbs, André, the Giant was larger than life and we take you back to August 21, 1989, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa…cameramen Ben Hilderbrandt drew the task of shooting, editing and writing a piece about the WWF that was in town that night! The ring announcer came over to the cameraman and said Andre is different and “you can’t record him wrestling” so the cameraman said he might record him walking to the ring and unfortunately it didn’t even take a few seconds and Andre was yelling for the camera. Andre slapped the cameraman upside the head and at one point the camera was also broken in the showdown.
André the Giant had been arrested on assault and criminal mischief charges. Yep, the guy who could drink in excess of 100 beers in one sitting! Being on the road for professional wrestling, I can only imagine this is “just another night” but over 34 years later, it’s no different. The police department in Cedar Rapids still jokes about it and has Andre’s handprint. André would pass away a couple of years later in 1993 due to congestive heart failure. Can you imagine getting handcuffs on this guy?!
