APPLETON, Wis. — Fireworks are blamed for multiple fires in Appleton during the Fourth of July weekend.
Firefighters say nearly all of the fires were caused by fireworks being improperly disposed of in dumpsters.
In one of the incidents, the flames reached a mixed-use building — causing exterior damage.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends soaking used fireworks in water for a few hours before wrapping them in plastic bags and throwing them in the trash.
In a separate incident, crews were called to a residence in the 1200 block of S. Herbert Street around 8:20 p.m. Sunday on the report of smoke and flames.
The fire had been put out by the time firefighters arrived.
A person inside the home suffered minor burns.
The cause of that fire is under investigation.
