Two supermarket dessert aisle giants are burying the competitive hatchet and teaming-up to form a previously unthinkable, or perhaps previously ONLY thinkable, alliance! Fans have been begging rivals Oreo and Reese’s to release a tasty collaboration, but until now, Mondelēz International (owner of Oreo) and the Hershey Company (owner of Reese’s) have kept the idea at arm’s length.
Dan Mohnshine, Vice President of Hershey’s U.S. Confection Marketing division, says the social media murmurs had simply grown too loud to ignore:
“Essentially, what consumers often start riffing on in social media is ‘What would go great in a Reese’s cup?’ The top brand that they consistently mention time and time again is Oreo,” he stated to CNN.
There will be a pair of creations made available from the team, each taking a lead role. The Reese’s Oreo Cup will swap out the typical chocolate shell on a Reese’s cup in favor of an Oreo milk chocolate and white cream version, filled with peanut butter and Oreo cookie crumbs. The Oreo-forward offering might invoke feelings of deja vu for some fans, as it revives a 2014 limited time release (with an added twist): an Oreo cookie filled with Reese’s peanut butter and, for this iteration, Oreo crumbs mixed into the filling.
Both Hershey and Oreo will feature presale options on their respective websites, starting on August 18th, with plans to roll out product to store shelves in September.
