GREEN BAY, Wis. — A mistrial is declared in a wrongful death lawsuit against Calumet County.
A federal jury in Green Bay is unable to reach a verdict in a suit brought by the family of Demetrius Stephenson, who died by suicide in the Calumet County Jail back in 2019.
The family alleges the sheriff’s office failed to provide the 18-year-old Stephenson with the proper mental health care and ignored his threats to kill himself.
On Friday, the jury foreperson let the judge know that several jurors were refusing to change their minds on a verdict.
The family could refile the case.
