This is arguably the greatest limited release, holiday-themed treat ever created, and I don’t think it’s an argument at all!
When I was a kid, the Original Whipped Crème Egg from Buddy Squirrel was such a coveted commodity that the release date was a calendar-worthy event. You had to know when they went on sale, because when they were gone, they were gone, and they were usually gone that day. That’s not hyperbole. My grandmother would brave the elements and the line to haul away as many boxes as her 5’0” frame could support, and the line was legendary, spilling out of the doors and extending well down the block at the Buddy Squirrel factory store on Bolivar Avenue in St. Francis, WI.
Like the obligatory Black Friday feature piece of today, every television station had a story and an interview…the paper printed a photo of the empty shelves that could just as easily have been an archived pic from a decade prior. The Original Whipped Crème Egg release day was an event.
The ability to get a hold of these babies has gotten infinitely more convenient these days, available online and (seemingly) in far greater quantities than in the days of my youth. But unlike so many of our evolutions, wherein reputation takes a back seat to the bottom line, only the convenience and the packaging have changed over the years. The folks at Buddy Squirrel, now under the Quality Candy umbrella, have not compromised the product in the least, at least in no way that my taste buds can detect. The 2024 version might as well be a hermetically sealed egg from 1984. Perfection (and childhood) in a single box.
