APPLETON, WI — Appleton residents get their say in how the Appleton Area School District deals with student truancy and absenteeism.
The district and the City of Appleton hold a listening session Monday on the Student Attendance Policy. Attendees met in small groups with school administrators to share ideas about current efforts to reduce truancy and gather ideas and questions from residents.
Stephanie Marta, the school district’s Attendance Coordinator, says her group wondered the effectiveness of current truancy prevention.
Members of another small group headed by Katie Freiks questioned one proposal to resume issuing citations to offending students.
A group led by Assistant Superintendent Sheree Garvey wondered whether student input was sought on truancy prevention.
Superintendent Greg Hartjes says student input is a primary concern in combating truancy.
Input from the listening session will be considered by the Appleton Common Council in the fall.
