All right, parents. Just when you thought you had a grasp on “6-7,” or at least just when you thought that “6-7” might be playing itself out, enter “41.” It’s tough to explain this one because, well, to be honest, it’s like a lot of trends…it just leaves you asking, “Why?” And again, like a lot of trends, the answer doesn’t really matter. It just sort of happens, and all of the sudden a guy’s song lyrics turn into a wildfire of interpretive dance. You know, now that I type that, “41” isn’t hard to explain at all. That’s exactly what it is.
It can be difficult, as a parent, to know exactly what we’re dealing with when it comes to emerging trends and meme culture. Should we be concerned? Is it code for something? If we attempt to engage, are we making fools out of ourselves or are we doing the right thing? Do we need to shut this down?
Here’s the good news on “41”…some of the lyrics aren’t necessary what we’d hope our kids would be feeding their ears, but on the grand scale, the Gen Alpha “41” meme is fairly benign, and the dance is built for universal success. Translation: the dance is crazy easy. We can do this. That doesn’t mean our kids will welcome it, that doesn’t mean that we should do it, and you can decide if the unedited lyrics attached to the meme are admissible in your home – pretty decent argument to say “no” – but at least we won’t tear an Achilles doing it.
