GREEN LAKE, WI–Harmful blue green algae is discovered for the first time ever in Green Lake.
A member of the Green Lake Association reported seeing paint-like streaks and suspicious water conditions on the shoreline on September 16. Samples of the water taken that same day confirmed blue green algae–also call cyanobacteria–along the north and south shorelines and in the middle of the lake.
Blue green algae was detected at the deepest part of Green Lake at more than 200-feet. The algae blooms can produce toxins that are harmful to pets and people.
The Green Lake Association is recommending people avoid swimming, boating and fishing in areas where algae is present.
