Appleton schools could have a new truancy system in place tonight.
The school board is meeting tonight to go over options for dealing with absent students. Members will have to decide whether to get county courts involved, as a last resort.
The first option calls for schools to connect students with community partners. They could keep trying different groups to find one that works.
If students are still missing classes, the board could choose to give schools the option of referring them to the county, and possibly give them a truancy ticket.
After complaints from parents and students last year, the district suspended its truancy court. A special task force spent several months coming up with a different system.
The board is holding a work session on the options at 4:30 p.m. The regular meeting starts at 6 p.m.
