A Brown County Board committee is giving the go-ahead for a plan that would let the county take over bridge tender positions in Green Bay.
The city currently operates the three bridges in downtown.
The county’s public works director Paul Fontecchio says his crew already does a lot of maintenance on the bridges.
He feels the ultimate goal is to operate the bridges remotely from the Walnut Street bridge.
The plan also calls for downsizing the number of bridge tenders from 12 to five.
It will also allow them to be used as snow plow drivers in the winter and is projected to save about $400,000 per navigation season.
The Coast Guard will take public input on the issue until October 28th.
