The Appleton school district’s new truancy system could lead to the county’s youth and family services agency getting involved.
Scott Kornish is the division manager for Outagamie County, and he says the process would start with a meeting with the student and family. He says it’s possible that the student starts going to class, and the case would close.
Kornish says the majority of cases move on to a deferred prosecution agreement, with the student having to take certain steps, with help from the county.
He expects a small percentage won’t follow the deal, and they could end up in juvenile court. The student could not receive a ticket for truancy.
The county already works with other school districts in the county,, and Kornish says a small percentage of students with only truancy problems get to the juvenile court level.
The school board approved a new truancy plan last night. The first step calls for connecting the student to community partners for support.
