There are some proposed changes to Appleton’s rules for having beehives and one of them would eliminate a neighbor’s chance to veto the permit.
The city lets people apply to have hives at homes and businesses. Right now, neighbors within 400 feet of a hive are notified.
Alderman Alex Schultz wants to drop that notification. He understands there’s a fear of being stung. Schultz says honey bees can actually take the place of more dangerous wasps and hornets.
Earlier this year the city council approved a permit for a rooftop hive at McFleshman’s Brewing Company on State Street in the downtown. A business across the street vetoed the proposal and McFleshman’s appealed. Another proposal would reduce the cost for a permit.
