Appleton could change the time limits for short-term parking meters in the downtown to deal with concerns of some businesses.
Under state law people with handicapped plates or tags can park as long as they want for free if the limit is a half-hour or more. The current limit at the red meters is a half-hour and there’s a proposal to change it to 25 minutes. That way everyone would have to follow it. The lack of turnover has been an issue for some businesses by the City Center.
Public Works Director Paula Vandehey believes they’ll have more spaces for the disabled once the work on the former Blue Ramp site is done. She says they might move longer-term parking to Oneida Street, and that could be a better way for people to get into the building.
The city’s municipal services committee agreed to the change. The city council will take it up next week.
