DNR wardens caught two men trapping fish on the Wolf River this spring, and it’s the first time they’ve had a bust on that river in about 20 years.
Conservation Warden Zachary Seitz says they got a tip that it was going on in the Shiocton area, and the search was like finding a needle in a haystack. He says they went out on a kayak on one day, and because the river is so wide, there are so many places to hide them.
Seitz says he spent 12 hours sitting in cold water on April 9th, waiting and watching, with no luck. He says the men were spotted the next day with their boat and traps.
Forty-one-year-old David Collar and 52-year-old James Shears were arrested, and they paid fines of around $1,200. They also lost their fishing, hunting, and trapping privileges for a year.
