With the school year underway, it won’t be long before students will be going through safety drills.
Glenn Rehberg is the head of the state’s office of school safety, and he doesn’t think they should be frightening. He says when schools hold active shooter drills, they should be done calmly, with a focus on teaching students what to do.
Rehberg says when schools held fire drills years ago, they didn’t fill the halls with smoke or have red lights to represent fire.
His office is part of the state justice department. He oversaw a $100 million grant program to help school districts upgrade safety and security in their buildings.
