The Winnebago County Judiciary and Safety Committee will consider a measure today that would replace the elected Coroner with a hired medical examiner to handle death investigations.
The coroner position will become vacant at the end of October, with the resignation of Barry Busby. But Committee Chairman Bill Wingren says the remaining three years of the current term will still have to be filled by somebody. He says if a coroner is appointed, they have to resign in order for the county to be able to get a medical examiner. He says it might be tricky to have someone run just so they can resign.
33 of the 72 counties in Wisconsin have a medical examiner, rather than an elected Coroner.
