Winnebago County Sheriff John Matz credits local media for not “sensationalizing” last week’s stabbing and shooting at Oshkosh West High School.
Matz asked reporters not to use the name of the 16-year-old student, out of concern of copycat crimes. For the most part, news outlets waited until the boy was charged with a crime yesterday.
WHBY News didn’t release the suspect’s name until he was charged.
The boy is accused of stabbing school police officer Michael Wissink. Police say Wissink then shot the teen.
