A half-cent sales tax goes into effect in Outagamie County today.
The tax is expected to generate $20 million to go toward property tax relief, capital improvements, schools and municipalities.
The board had to override County Executive Tom Nelson’s veto to put the sales tax in place.
Nelson opposes the tax because he feels it will cost people who live in the county about $100 a year and that will hurt people on a tight budget.
Supporters say about a quarter of the tax will be paid for by people who live outside of the county.
