Killer Mike and T.I. spoke out about the murder of Rayshard Brooks. On June 12th, 27-year-old Brooks was shot in the back and killed by Atlanta police after he was initially found asleep at a Wendy's drive through. Killer Mike took to Instagram and wrote, “#RayshardBrooks should be alive this morning. He should be waking up (hungover or drunk in the tank depending on whether he was apprehended) and not dead.”
He continued, “If I’m the Wendy’s worker who called the police, I feel like s–t this morning because a call for a man sleeping in a car should not have ended with his killing. And if he were the child in one of the cars? I’m scared s–tless of anyone with a uniform or gun. I’m mad as hell and I am saddened beyond consolation. At a minimum, we need a law that prevents shooting a person while they’re fleeing. If there is no weapon, fleeing from an officer should be a foot chase and a radio race.”
Meanwhile, T.I. joined protestors in Atlanta this weekend and spoke about Brooks' murder, saying, “I don’t give a damn what your opinion is of the person. I don’t give a damn what he did. The man didn’t deserve to die like that. And any policeman out here who stands behind that sh*t your a** in trouble too.”
He added, “We are going to have to organize. We’re going to have to demonstrate but we are going to have to do it with purpose. And when I say purpose, I mean direction. We’ve got to go where we need to go and do what we need to do in those areas.”
Since Brooks’ death, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced that Police Chief Erika Shields has stepped down. The officer who shot Brooks, a white man, has also been fired.
