Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard lends his voice to “Christmas in Antarctica,” a new song from frequent R.E.M. collaborator Scott McCaughey‘s band The Minus 5. The sad tune, which tells the tale of a lonely Christmas in the South Pole, is streaming now via Billboard.com.
“It’s a sad song, but it still feels poppy and Christmasy,” McCaughey tells Billboard of “Christmas in Antarctica,” which also feature’s R.E.M.’s Peter Buck.
“It’s tricky coming up with Christmas songs that aren’t just the same old thing over and over again,” McCaughey continues. “So for this [song] I was thinking about the North Pole being a big part of Christmas songs — why not Antarctica? Why does the North Pole get the monopoly on Christmas songs?”
Gibbard and Death Cab, meanwhile, recently wrapped a U.S. tour behind their new album, Thank You for Today. They’ll launch a South American run this Saturday in Chile.
